Custom Pet Bed Design Process | OEM Pet Bed Development
Wondering what happens after you place a custom pet bed order? Here’s the full production process — from first sample to your doorstep.
You’ve sent your design. You’ve approved the sample. You’ve placed the order.
Then what?
For most brands, the manufacturing process is a black box. You send money, you wait, you hope. That’s not how it should work. Here’s exactly what happens behind the scenes when you order custom pet beds from us — and what you should expect from any manufacturer worth working with.

Phase 1: Sample Development (7–14 Days)
This is where your idea becomes something you can touch.
What happens:
– Our team reviews your design files, reference photos, or physical samples
– We select appropriate materials based on your spec (fabric, filling, hardware)
– A pattern is drafted and a prototype is sewn
– The sample is photographed and shipped to you for approval
What you should expect:
– Clear communication on material substitutions (if your specified fabric isn’t available, we’ll suggest alternatives — not just swap without telling you)
– A realistic timeline, not an optimistic one
– Honest feedback if your design has structural issues (e.g., a bolster that won’t hold its shape, a fabric that won’t hold up to pet use)Pro tip: Don’t skip the sample stage to save time. A sample costs a fraction of your batch order and catches problems that are expensive to fix in production.
Phase 2: Material Sourcing & Preparation (5–10 Days)
Once you approve the sample, we lock in materials and prepare for production.
What happens:
– Fabrics are sourced and dyed to your color spec (PMS matching available)
– Filling materials are ordered to the exact density and type you approved
– Zippers, labels, and hardware are prepared
– All materials are inspected for defects before cutting begins
What can go wrong here:
– Fabric dye lots can vary slightly — we flag this and send photos before proceeding
– Specialty materials (waterproof coatings, specific foam densities) may add 3–5 days to sourcing
– If you change your mind on materials after this point, it restarts the clock
What you should expect: A confirmation from us that all materials are in-house and ready. No surprises during production.
Phase 3: Cutting & Sewing (5–12 Days, Depending on Batch Size)
This is where your pet beds take physical form.
What happens:
– Fabric is cut using your approved patterns — by hand for small batches, by machine for larger runs
– Pieces are assembled and sewn in stages: base, bolsters, cover, inner cushion
– Each bed is stitched by experienced sewers who specialize in pet products (yes, that matters — pet beds have unique stress points that require specific stitching techniques)
Quality checkpoints:
– Stitch density and seam strength
– Correct dimensions (±1cm tolerance)
– Fill distribution — no lumps, gaps, or uneven padding
– Hardware attachment (zippers, velcro, snaps) tested for function
What you should expect: In-process photos if you want them. A manufacturer who’s proud of their work doesn’t hide the process.
Phase 4: Assembly & Finishing (3–5 Days)
What happens:
– Inner cushions are stuffed to your specified fill weight and density
– Covers are fitted and inspected
– Logos, labels, and tags are attached per your spec (embroidery, woven labels, printed care tags)
– Final quality check on every single unit — not a random sample
This is where attention to detail separates manufacturers:
– Are the labels straight? Is the embroidery clean with no loose threads?
– Does the zipper work smoothly? Is the velcro aligned?
– Does the bed look like the sample you approved — or like a cheaper version of it?

Phase 5: Packaging (2–4 Days)
Packaging is part of your product. It’s what your customer sees first.
What happens:
– Each bed is compressed and packed per your packaging spec (custom box, poly bag, vacuum seal, or your design)
– Insert cards, instruction sheets, or branded tissue paper are included if specified
– Each unit is labeled with SKU, size, and color for easy fulfillment on your end
– Outer cartons are packed for shipping — reinforced for international transit
Options we offer:
– Vacuum compression (saves 40–60% on shipping volume)
– Individual custom boxes with your branding
– Bulk pack for warehouse fulfillment
– Retail-ready packaging with barcode and hang tagPro tip: Vacuum compression is a game-changer for shipping costs. A pet bed that fills a 50×50×20cm box can compress to 50×50×8cm. On a 100-unit order, that’s the difference between air freight and sea freight economics.
Phase 6: Shipping (7-35 Days, Depending on Method)
| Method | Transit Time | Best For |
| Express (DHL/FedEx) | 5–7 days | Samples, urgent small batches |
| Air freight | 7–12 days | First production run, time-sensitive launches |
| Sea freight | 25–35 days | Reorders, larger batches, cost optimization |
What you should expect:
① Tracking number within 24 hours of dispatch
②Photos of packed cartons before shipping
③ Commercial invoice and packing list for customs
④Support with import documentation if needed
The brands that have the smoothest experience are the ones that stay responsive during the sample and approval stages, then let us do our job. The biggest delays almost always come from slow approvals, not slow production.
